CureNow: What have you been up to since your reign ended?
Nicole Johnson: I have traveled all over the world (15 countries) speaking about diabetes and diabetes care. I have continued to fund raise for diabetes research- I have assisted in raising over $17 million for diabetes research. I have also branched out into other areas of advocacy for this cause. This year I have published 2 books, Living With Diabetes, my autobiography and a cookbook, Mr. Food's Quick and Easy Diabetic Cooking- with Nicole Johnson. I am so thrilled to be a published author. I am now working on a second cookbook with Mr. Food that is due out in 2002.
How has your role as Miss America 1999 helped you spread the word about diabetes?
I gained visibility and a platform from which to speak. People are willing to listen to my voice on this issue. That is a result of winning the title of Miss America.
You actively promote insulin pumps. Why are you so enthusiastic about them?
The pump has changed my life. My health has improved so much since going on the pump over 4 years ago. I am thrilled to promote and represent a product that I so wholeheartedly believe in. It is personal for me. I am a lifelong advocate of intense therapy for diabetes care.
You were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 19, was it difficult to adjust to a whole new schedule?
It was extremely difficult. I was able to make it through because of my faith and family.
What tips or tricks do you use to keep your diabetes in control?
Check out my tips on my website (www.nicolejohnson.com). I wear a pump and test my glucose at least 6 times a day. I also exercise as often as possible.
How do you keep from getting discouraged when things just aren't going to way you want?
This is where my faith and family help me so much. I rely on my diabetes accountability partners to help me. My family and friends are always there for me. They are willing to listen, cry with me or get on my case if I need it. I know that each day is a new battle with this disease and a new opportunity for success. That is also a tremendous help in coping on a daily basis.
What words of wisdom do you have for the diabetic youth?

Who has been your biggest inspiration?
I have several sources of inspiration. My friends with diabetes are my inspiration in my health care. I know so many people who have lived with this condition for many years and are as healthy as you can imagine. I also have friends who are cancer survivors that inspire me daily. I also am touched and moved by the life of Jesus. He preserved and acted as a servant to so many. That is the truest source of inspiration I can think of. His life and an attitude I strive to emulate.
