Valentine's Day for Kids
February 2002

Valentine's Day, with its chocolate and candy hearts, can be hard when you have diabetes. Here are some yummy ways for keeping your blood sugar under control while still having fun.

Candy Games

Before your party even begins, take your store bought candy and divide them evenly, counting the carbohydrates as you go. Label each bag with the amount of carbs outside. This will be helpful when playing the following games.

Some good candy to include are SweetHearts, M & M's and Hershey Kisses (they are candies that can be eaten one at a time and they don't have a lot of sugar individually), sugar free candies from Fifty-Fifty, or pretzels, teddy graham crackers, or peanuts (to had a tasty, healthy side to the bag). You can also include heart stickers, sugar free gum, or cheap lip balm in different flavors for girls.

Cake walk: Take different colored construction paper and number them 1-10. Lay them down in a circle in an open area. Take your candy bags and one on each piece of paper. Get a stereo with some fun music and have each of your guests stand next to one of the piles. Start the music. Play the music for 20-30 seconds. After you turn the music off, pick a number between 1-10. The one who stands on the pile gets the candy. Play this as many times as you like until all the piles have been given out.

Hide n' Kisses: Hide Hershey Kisses around the room or house and see how many your guests can find in any given amount of time. The winner gets another bag of candy

Poetry Writing Contest: Have your guests write their own version of "Roses are red, violets are blue…" Most original wins a bag of candy (prizes can also be given out to runners up).

When you're done with the games, bake cookies. Seems strange to bake cookies when you have diabetes, but after you bake them, share them with your friends and family. Decorate them with red and pink sparkles or hearts using red frosting.
